How to Reply to a GST Notice? Process, Documents, Time Limit & Expert Guidance
Receiving a notice from a GST officer does not automatically mean that tax is payable. It may seek a GST clarification, identify a GST return mismatch, question input tax credit or begin cancellation or demand proceedings. Identify the issue, verify the figures and submit a complete GST Notice Reply on time.
Remind Legal helps taxpayers examine notices, reconcile records and prepare evidence-based responses.
Quick Summary
- Verify the notice, allegations and deadline on the GST portal.
- Reconcile returns, invoices, ledgers and payments.
- Submit a point-by-point taxpayer response with supporting documents.
- Save the acknowledgement and attend any scheduled hearing.
What Is a GST Notice?
A GST notice is basically an official communication from a tax authority concerning matters such as registration, scrutiny, unpaid tax, refunds, input tax credit, audit or cancellation.
Common notices include: -

The form matters because the procedure and deadline differ. Read the attachment, not only the email or SMS alert.
What Is the Time Limit for a GST Notice Reply?
There is no common deadline for every tax notice. Check the applicable provision and the date stated in the notice.
Under the official GST rules, an ASMT-10 response period cannot exceed 15 days from the date of service. REG-03 and REG-17 normally require the replies within seven working days. For the DRC-01 or any other show cause notice, follow its stated deadline and various governing provisions.
If you genuinely need more time, then request an extension before the deadline and provide valid reasons. Do not assume the approval without any confirmation.
Step-by-Step Process to Reply to a GST Notice
- Authenticate and Download the Notice
Log in to the official GST portal and open Services > User Services > View Notices and Orders, as shown in the official portal guide. Match the GSTIN, notice reference number, tax period and date. Download all the annexures.
- Identify the Allegation and Legal Provision
Determine whether the issue concerns turnover, return differences, input tax credit or the registration. Note each and every allegation, proposed amount and the cited provision.
- Reconcile the Records
Compare the notice with the GST returns, GSTR-2B, electronic ledgers, registers, invoices and accounts. Prepare a reconciliation explaining every difference with the dates and figures.
- Prepare a Point-by-Point Reply
Mention the taxpayer’s name, GSTIN, notice number, date and the subject. Present the facts and answer each and every allegation separately. Link to each response to the relevant provision and the evidence. Try to avoid any unsupported denials or any unnecessary or unwanted admissions.
- Attach Supporting Documents
Supporting documents may include: -
- GST returns and reconciliation statements;
- tax invoices, credit notes and debit notes;
- GSTR-2B extracts and input tax credit workings;
- electronic ledgers and payment challans;
- e-way bills, contracts and delivery records; and
- bank, registration or business records.
Use readable scans, clear filenames and an annexure index.
- Submit and Track the Reply
Open the proceeding, select the reply option, enter the response, upload documents and authenticate using DSC or EVC, as available. Save the acknowledgement and track further action.
Consult Remind Legal for a properly reconciled GST Notice Reply before making an admission or payment.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not ignore the notice.
- Avoid filing a generic response.
- Do not alter records or pay the demand without verifying it.
- Non-response may result in an ex-parte decision, penalty or cancellation.
- Disclose any admitted amount accurately.
